The Garden of Eden

Lesson #3

Genesis 2-6

God’s creation was fresh, clean and new. The scriptures say, “And God saw that it was good.” All that God does is good and perfect.

God provided a beautiful, comfortable home for the first man and his wife, Adam and Eve. It was in the pleasant Garden of Eden.

God planted every tree that is pretty and good for food in the garden. He also planted the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. He told Adam and Eve that they could eat of all the fruit of the trees except for the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. God said, “Don’t touch it!”

Four rivers ran out of the river which ran through the garden. There was plenty of water for the garden. God had already given Adam the task of naming all the animals and birds. Now, God has planted a garden for Adam to tend and keep. The man has been given work to do. God knows we are happiest when we have work to do. Work is good for humans.

Life was so wonderful at first, but then something terrible happened. Eve encountered Satan, in the form of a serpent out in the garden. He spoke to her and convinced her to taste the fruit from the tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. She should not have done that. God has said, “Don’t touch it!”

After Eve tasted the fruit, she persuaded Adam to taste it. He did not resist the temptation of the pretty fruit. So he ate some of it. He should not have done that either. God had said, “Don’t touch it!”

Now things were in a mess! Adam and Eve had disobeyed God. That means: they had sinned. God knew what they had done. He knows everything. He talked with them about what they had done.

God told Adam and Eve that they must leave the beautiful garden, and they must go out into a world of troubles to live since they had sinned. They were no longer innocent but had come to know good and evil and they learned they would die some day. God commanded a guard be placed at the Tree of Life so Adam and Eve could not also eat of it and live forever. Before Adam and Eve sinned, God had provided a way to live forever.
